Solution 1: Disable Your Antivirus and Run NMM as Administrator
Sometimes the Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) has problems gaining enough permission on your computer in order to access certain files needed for the installation to go through. This often means that it’s either your antivirus program blocking the tool or it needs to be run with administrator permissions!
Disabling the antivirus is a process which greatly differs from one antivirus tool to another but everyone should disable Windows Defender for the installation to succeed so follow the steps below in order to do so!

Solution 2: Get the Latest Version of NMM
It appears that The Nexus decided to drop support for the tool and it moved on to become a GitHub project where the old NMM developers are still releasing new builds. The common NMM versions from the site contain this error but they managed to fix it in the newest build. You might need to uninstall the old version of NMM first as drastic changes may have been made.
Now you should download the latest version of NMM in order to complete this method.
Solution 3: Free up some Space on Your PC or Use a Different Partition
A lack of space may just be the problem you are facing when receiving this error. When you try to install mods, its size may grow up to 10 times as they are often highly compressed. There are mods which weigh 800MB originally but grow to take up 8GB of space.
That is why you should free up space on your computer for the installation to succeed. Firstly try deleting the files you don’t need such as downloaded installers. Try moving some of your documents to cloud. Uninstall programs you don’t use; especially games you no longer play as they tend to take up the most space. Try running the installation afterwards to see if the problem is gone.
Alternative: If you have a second partition or a second physical storage device connected to your computer, you can even change the folder where NMM will store extracted files from the mod. This is the problematic part as these files are deleted afterwards but you fail to install the game properly. Follow the steps below to change this setting to a different location!
Solution 4: Install Mods in Safe Mode
This method is more of a workaround but if you receive this problem when installing a single mod or two, this may be the perfect choice as it’s quick and easy. Starting Windows in Safe Mode will disable certain items from starting up at all and it will load only basic things Windows needs to operate on startup and it’s a great way to troubleshoot the issue.
Now that you have successfully navigated to Safe Mode after restarting your computer, you should run NMM and try to install the mod which was giving you the problem. Check to see if the same error appears again!

i had this problem, i re-scanned installed games, closed nmm and then ran as admin, that did the trick for me

Hey, i stumbled across this and couldnt find a Solution but i found it in reddit.
Disable your Antivirus bevore install and reactivate it afterwards ofc. Run the NMM in Admin and it should work.

The same thing is happening to me.
A month ago i could install most mods without a problem, but now as soon as i try to activate AWKCR and a few weapon mods it immediately says «a problem occured during install»
I got that message last month 2 or 3 times as well but then i always seemed to make it work by restarting the mod manager. Now though, nothing seem to work
Im desperate for a fix here.
Edit: Maybe not a surprise but i realized that the mods that can’t be the installed are the ones who has one of those install menus with optional choices.
Manual installation, and activation in the NMM solves all problems.
A common cause for needing to run NMM as administrator is Fallout 4 being installed in Program Files.
Also, the latest NMM version has a fix for xml files not working. You might have to download and manually install over your existing NMM. I noticed that the built-in updater in my NMM did not detect that there was in fact a new version.

Having the same issue with New Vegas. Never had any problems with installing mods before but with 0.65.2 nothing seems to be working and its getting really annoying.
Get the latest NMM update from GitHUB where the NMM developers are working since NMM is no longer supported by The Nexus. All NMM versions prior to v0.65.3 had an xml code error that, among other things, prevents you from swapping plug-ins in NMM’s plugins tab when an esl is loaded above an esm.
Latest NMM version to date is 0.65.5.

Okay, yesterday I started to install mods using Nexus Mod Manager. I followed the guides, and youtube vids and it worked fine. Today however, I wanted to install the Realistic water 2 mod, but it doesnt install.
Here’s what I did:
I have already installed these mods: Unofficial skyrim patch, SMIM, SkyUI, skse64, Skyrim flora Overhaul and Skyrim grass plugin.
I downloaded from the NMM website the Realistic water 2 mod manually, I opened NMM using admin rights. I add the mod from file, than I activate and install. At 50% unpacking it stops, saying:

I use the newest version of Nexus Mod Manager, I’ve restarted the app multiple times, redownloaded it multiple times and even tried the previous version. Sofar it still doesn’t work.
Generic problem with current version of NMM. Any possible internal error in it can be causing it. There is a reason why it was abandoned.
Nexus team returned to NMM one more time, to fix an issue related to upcoming changes. There is a security issue that will be updated for NMM, Vortex and Mod Organizer 2. Old managers will stop working with Nexus downloads, once that has passed through. It is possible (though a bit unlikely) that upcoming 0.65 release of NMM will fix your problem.
NMM is no longer in development, or officially supported by anyone. I would recommend taking a look at Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 instead.

Nexus Mod Manager: A problem occurred during install.
So recently, my computer crashed and I lost all of my game data, including old mods and my local saves. This past week, I re-downloaded Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition and started installing new mods. When I first started playing, the game kept telling me I could not load my old saves from the cloud because my content was not authorized. I found a fix online that told me to change all of the requiresauthorization «1» files in the addins.xml to requiresauthorization «0» and I would be able to use my DLCs. I did this and the game allowed me to load old saves, but now new mods give me this error when i try to install them:
A problem occurred during install:
Invalid Characters in the given code. Line 13, position 44.
The mod was not installed.
I tried resetting the requiresauthorization back to «1» instead of «0», hoping this would resolve the problem, but it still gives me the same error. I’ve attempted installing many different mods to see if the issue is just with particular types. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas what I can do to fix this, or at least where to start? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so first, «Bumping is. bad». Please (re-)read the Nexus Terms of Service. (It’s considered spamming the site.)
Second, you need to have a completely stable install of the base game before you go using any mods. If I were you, I’d do a complete un-/re-install and make sure that everything is working properly, including all your DLC and bonus items. If you have problems with getting the vanilla game working, contact the EA Game Advisors at their Help Center.
Third, EA’s «Sync with cloud» offering is woefully inadequate for DAO (or DA2.) There’s a 100MB limit per game title. DAO saves can get to 1GB per character! Once you’ve exceeded the limit, you’ll never be able to use the cloud saves for that game at all. So always back-up your DAO saves yourself.
